Northwestern State University Campus Master Plan

Northwestern State University partnered with AQ Studios and CARBO Landscape Architecture to craft a comprehensive vision for the next generation of its historic campus. Founded in 1884, NSU’s campus has grown organically over time, resulting in a diverse architectural fabric but also fragmented connections and uneven campus identity. The master plan responds by weaving together history, place, and future needs into a cohesive, student-focused framework for growth.

At the heart of the plan is a new Greenbelt—a pedestrian spine that links the campus’s historic quads and restores walkability to the academic core. Anchoring this revitalized core is a reimagined Student Union, designed to connect directly to primary campus pathways and strengthen the heart of student life. Beyond the academic core, the plan enhances the athletics district with a new Victory Plaza and improved fan experience, while Chaplin Lake is re-envisioned as both a recreational hub and ecological landscape. Residential growth, parking strategies, and improved circulation round out a framework designed to be both ambitious and adaptable over the next 10 to 20 years.

Developed through visioning sessions, charrettes, and broad student and faculty engagement, the plan is grounded in NSU’s heritage while looking forward to a vibrant, connected, and enduring campus environment. More than a roadmap, it is a strategy for shaping the everyday spaces where learning, community, and campus pride intersect.
