Heather Cooper, AIA, NCARB

Heather Cooper, AIA, is a recognized leader in historic restoration and adaptive reuse, bringing a unique combination of architectural design expertise and preservation knowledge to complex renovation projects. As Studio Lead for AQ’s Historic Renovation Studio, she has led more than 450,000 square feet of historic restoration and adaptive reuse work representing over $125 million in construction value.

With a Master of Architecture and Master of Preservation Studies from Tulane University, Heather specializes in the rehabilitation, restoration, and repositioning of historic buildings, helping clients unlock new value from existing assets while preserving the character and significance that make them unique and leveraging tax credits to make projects cost effective for owners. Her experience spans multifamily residential, hospitality, commercial, and mixed-use developments, with a particular focus on transforming underutilized historic structures into vibrant, economically sustainable destinations.

Heather is known for navigating the complexities of preservation regulations, historic tax credit programs, and adaptive reuse design challenges while balancing project goals, budget requirements, and long-term asset performance. Her work has contributed to the revitalization of historic buildings throughout New Orleans and the Gulf South, where she collaborates closely with developers, owners, and stakeholders to create projects that honor the past while meeting contemporary market demands.

Growing up in a small Vermont town, Heather was fascinated by the allure of big cities – their architecture, density, and history. Now she plays a major role in the revitalization of urban cores through historic preservation and adaptive reuse. Outside of the office, Heather loves sports, especially soccer, and spending time with her family – husband, Lee, daughter, Casey, son, Hayes, and lovable dog, Pru.
