Top Challenges Facing K-12 Facilities

In the spring of 2025, AQ Studios joined K-12 facility leaders at the Louisiana State Facility Managers Association (LSFMA) Conference in Baton Rouge. As part of our booth engagement, we invited school facility managers to share their top challenges — both in person (via interactive presentation boards) and through an online survey.

The goal was simple: to better understand the top challenges holding back facilities across Louisiana and to start a conversation about how design, planning, and strategic facility improvements can make a difference.

Key Findings
From the 72 total responses, eight themes emerged that reflect the current pressures on Louisiana’s school facilities:

• Maintenance & Operations (27.8%)
  The largest concern across all districts. Aging infrastructure, water intrusion, and HVAC inefficiencies topped the list — pointing to facilities that need not just repairs but long-term renewal strategies.
  
• Safety & Security (13.9%)
  Facility managers emphasized the importance of secure entries, access control, and upgraded monitoring systems. Many noted the need for campus-wide safety planning, not just isolated fixes.
  
• Budget & Funding Challenges (11.1%)
  Funding gaps remain a systemic issue. Districts are often forced into reactive spending on emergencies, leaving little room for planned upgrades or lifecycle planning.
  
• Space Utilization & Capacity Planning (11.1%)
  Growing enrollment, aging portable classrooms, and insufficient multipurpose spaces reveal a mismatch between facilities and today’s teaching needs.
  
• Technology & Infrastructure Upgrades (11.1%)
  Outdated electrical systems and limited digital capacity make it difficult to keep pace with modern learning requirements. Bandwidth and classroom tech integration were recurring concerns.
  
• Supply Chain & Procurement Delays (9.7%)
  Rising costs and procurement bottlenecks are delaying projects and straining already tight budgets.
  
• Compliance & Changing Regulations (8.3%)
  ADA accessibility compliance was flagged most often, followed by fire and life safety requirements.
  
• Emergency Preparedness & Resilience (6.9%)
  While ranked lowest overall, concerns about storm preparedness and the need for backup power highlight the vulnerability of Louisiana schools to climate events.

Why It Matters
These findings underscore a complex reality: school leaders aren’t facing a single challenge but rather an interwoven set of issues that span funding, safety, infrastructure, and resilience. For example:

• Efforts to improve safety are often constrained by aging buildings that lack modern systems.
• Technology upgrades cannot be realized without first addressing outdated electrical and data backbones.
• Emergency preparedness requires both upfront investment and district-wide planning.

What we heard most clearly is that schools need support in balancing the urgent with the strategic — ensuring today’s emergencies don’t eclipse tomorrow’s improvements.
